This department began its activity in 1990 as the first academic department of the Faculty of Science, located in one of the old buildings of the faculty of Agriculture by admitting students in the field of pure chemistry at undergraduate level. After the graduation of the first group of students in 1394, it admitted students for graduate studies in analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry, expanding its activities in education and research.

In 2001, the faculty started admitting students for PhD program in the inorganic chemistry field. In 1381, it started admitting students for undergraduate trend in applied chemistry; and in 2003 for PhD in organic chemistry. In 2007, it admitted students for PhD program in analytical chemistry.

In 2011, applied chemistry and polymer chemistry were launched for Master’s degrees, and further expanded their activity by admitting students for PhD studies in physical chemistry. In 2014, they started admitting students for undergraduate studies in nanochemistry.
